Before approx. 6 Years ago we recommended this player as a bargain player on our old homepage. Back then, as it were “Substitute player” in the Atlético Madrid B team, we always noticed him as an outstanding player. As mentioned in the Keidi Baré Report, the central midfield at Atlético was always well occupied, was it hard, to make the jump and so it was available for both loan and sale. He was changing at that time, for one year on loan to UD Almería (had previously been with RCD Mallorca for a year), and Atlético will be happy, not to have sold it at the time (there was a transfer of 5 million in the room, that nobody was willing to pay). Now, also 6 Years later, the situation has changed a bit, we almost have to say, he is still a “Bargain Player” and why, we explain that at the end of the report.

Sometimes you have to come out as a fan of a player in scouting, we want to do this. Of course it affects our judgment, but you don't like a player for no reason, but because it convinces with certain characteristics and skills. We want to explain which these are in this report.

How Thomas came to Europe in the first place, is almost ready for film. Discovered by Spanish scouts, within a short time he became one night- and fog action, so to speak “kidnapped” and brought to Spain for trial training. There was hardly any time, Inform family and friends. Only the father had been warned of such a situation weeks earlier. However, Thomas did not hesitate and agreed, the rest is history, he convinced Atlético right from the start and was signed directly (initially for the B team).

Player type / Home position

Under Diego Simeone, bad tongues could claim, every player is one “Box to Box” player, and in fact it is a little bit like that, This is definitely true for midfielders in particular. If you look at a heat map of one of his games, you will surely be able to see action points and heat points on the entire football field.

Since his personal role model to Steven Gerrard from childhood was / is, it is hardly surprising, that they are located in the central midfield and are very similar in terms of player types. Looking at Thomas's game with the Ghanaian national team, you have to acknowledge, that he doesn't make a bad figure even as an attacking midfielder and one is rather surprised, what incredible offensive skills he has. Basically, we also like to compare him with Denis Zakaria from Borussia Mönchengladbach, they are similar in many aspects and the basic position in the more defensive central midfield as a link between the defensive and the offensive with enough “Transition” to carry the ball forward and not only centrally but also laterally, So to offer again and again on the left and right and to act as a point of reference for the outside players.

As already mentioned, Thomas primarily shows defensive skills at Atlético. Ball conquests and especially anticipation and prevention / Cutting opposing passports are among his prime skills. Despite everything, we cannot get rid of the impression, it is rather a question of one “offensiveren” midfield player, defensive targeting “forced” becomes, maybe his dissatisfaction stirs (more on that later) also because of that, when he says, he would like to be even more important for his club. At least in his national team you can see his offensive qualities as already mentioned, clearly. Even at Atlético, possibly the most defensive top team in the world, his passes to the front and successful dribbles are remarkable in both number and quality. You can also see his pronounced game intelligence from his deadly passes in depth.

His physique is rather wiry and robust, surprisingly, he works in his gang- and movement type rather lanky despite its size of “just” 1,85m which gives him more advantages in conquering balls. He has enough assertiveness, to compete in each of the TOP 4 leagues. Without a certain level of aggressiveness, no player in the world could play a game under Diego Simeone anyway. He also shows teamwork and sacrifice for the team, like his teammates.

Weak points

We agree, that with a player of his caliber most of the time “Complain at a high level” operates, but as weaknesses we would first of all like his general speed of movement and now and then his speed of action in itself as well as art, make the right decisions. It may take a second too long for him, and the ball is conquered by the opponent, or the passport is too risky and is lost. With a perfectionist like Diego Simeone, this is a mortal sin, and maybe that's where the supposed one comes from “dissatisfaction” by Thomas, which he publishes from time to time in media articles to be revised later. The relationship between coach and Thomas is considered minimal in Spain. So one can certainly also describe the media dealings as unfortunate without wanting to assume that they are weak in character.

Even if around him, play Spanish icons and leaders, he could also participate more verbally in the game and communicate more often and louder.

If you look at the number of yellow cards compared to your teammates, it turns out more clearly. This depends on a mix of his weaknesses already mentioned, paired with the fact, that he is more often than “Interceptor” acts and may not have the best tackling timing and perfect top speed. Of course, some are important and “clever” tactical fouls underneath.

For us it counts in the central midfield (with a good balance between offensive- and defensive qualities) to the top 20 players in the world. In our opinion, a change therefore only makes sense, if the receiving club is above the level (at least the same) from Atlético. There are no longer too many clubs in themselves, the latest rumors about Juventus, PSG and Bayern Munich fit very well into the action. He definitely has the talent, to continue to prove its world class in every other league. Unlike other players, it fits into every league on earth. You can't do any here “perfect” Make league, the Premier League based on current popularity, and certainly has good cards for the financial possibilities. Arsenal London, for example, would be, without wanting to step too close, athletic rather a step backwards and therefore not recommended.

In any case, we would like to see the offensive qualities mentioned, that he will get more offensive freedom at his next station. Maybe it could make it even better and more important and fully exploit its potential.

Market value

Would you estimate the real market value before the corona situation, would probably at 80-100 Million lie, because in his position he is certainly a reference player (become). As of today, and based on the alleged fixed transfer of 50 Mio you would almost have him as mentioned at the beginning “Bargain Player” describe, because this sum will more than pay off for each receiving club.

The player currently has a proposal from Atlético to extend the contract for greatly improved remuneration and an exit clause of 100 million euros. He is still hesitating, since other large clubs have expressed interest. Depending on the club, everyone could 3 Pages benefit.
